I started teaching voice in 2000 (or so). Frankly, I needed a little extra money and thought I’d give it a shot. I sent out a mass e-mail and got my first two or three students. Now, I have a thriving voice studio that includes singers from 10 to 60.
Regardless of age, my philosophy is simple. I work with people to find their natural, easiest singing voice. We work hard, but we have fun. While some people certainly have a bit more natural ability than others, I am a firm believer that everyone can learn to sing and — if they put in the time and effort — learn to sing well.
The basic questions:
WHERE? Shetler Studios, 244 W. 54th Street (between Broadway and 8th), Penthouse Level
HOW MUCH? Adults over 18: $100/hour or $80/45-minutes. Kids: $85/hour.
WHAT AGES? That depends largely on the child. Kids over 12 are almost all ready, but sometimes younger kids have a hard time focusing or really “getting” it. As a result, I suggest that any child under 12 have a lesson, then I’ll chat with the parents about whether s/he is really ready for voice training.
DO I HAVE TO COME EVERY WEEK? The short answer is no. You don’t have to. However, you’re going to see the best results with consistency. I suggest finding a regular time once a week or every other week. There is often the temptation to “cram” for auditions or competitions. You can (and should) have voice lessons to prepare auditions, but I find these times less productive for long-term vocal growth. Working consistently over time will give you the best results.
